ACCREDITATION OF ICD PRACTITIONERS

CASSA is now proud to announce that it is offering this accreditation.

Introduction

These guidelines form the basis upon which cardiologists (non-electrophysiologists) intent on doing ICD implantation and follow-up would be accredited by CASSA in terms of their proficiency. This accreditation applies both to cardiologists who have not as yet started ICD implantation, as well as to those who are performing this procedure. The accreditation is for ICD implantation for primary prevention only. In cases where sustained or haemodynamically important ventricular tachyarrhythmias have occurred, implantation should be performed by electrophysiologists only. CASSA accredited electrophysiologists are accredited ICD implanters.

The Accreditation Process

  1. Proficiency in cardiac pacing and follow-up: this is a basic requirement.
  2. Attendance of a CASSA- accredited course (see list of companies offering these courses below) and submission to CASSA of a course certificate of attendance and satisfactory evaluation. These courses are being offered and facilitated by the following companies:
    • Medtronic
    • Boston Scientific
    • Amayeza Abantu
    • Biotronik

Cardiologists who have received accreditation from a reputable organization such as HRS or ESC will be exempt from the theoretical part of the accreditation process.

  3. Passing a test (multiple choice questions) administered by CASSA.
  4. Review of cases and mentoring by the CASSA accreditation committee (with different criteria for:

    a) novice ICD implanters
    b) experienced ICD practitioners.)

The complete accreditation document is available on the CASSA website www.cassa.co.za or can be obtained from Mrs. Franciska Rossouw franciska@cassa.co.za /0828061599.

Applications for Accreditation as an ICD Practitioner are now open and candidates who are interested can contact the CASSA Executive officer on the contact details above.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES PLANNED FOR 2012

1. Arrhythmia and ECG workshops for General Practitioners:

CASSA will be partnering with the respective IPA’s (Independent Practitioners’ Associations) in many parts of the country and book a date on their pre-determined CPD programmes for 2012. During the CASSA slot on the programme, GP’s will be lectures on the following two topics:

– A general approach to arrhythmia
– ECG’s

2. The Many Faces of Atrial Fibrillation II

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the Many Faces of AF Symposium that was held in 2010, CASSA will be hosting the follow-up in 2012. This roadshow will take place during the second half of the year and details will be placed on the CASSA website at the end of March 2012.

3. Medical Funders’ Forum

CASSA is planning a ‘Funders’ Forum’ – an educational day attended by all major medical aids and managed care associations.

4. Workshop for Clinical technologists
